King Charles Champions US-UK Alliance in Rousing Address to Congress – RedState

King Charles III addressed a joint session of Congress on Tuesday in his first speech as king, defending the U.S.-British alliance, condemning the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting and calling on the West to stay the course on Ukraine.

“I would like to thank the American people for welcoming us to the United States to mark this half-centennial of the Declaration of Independence,” Charles said. The 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence framed the speech.
He wasted no time in addressing current issues. Speaking days after the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, he denounced “the incident that occurred not far from this great building that sought to harm your nation’s leaders and foment broader fear and discord.” He did not mince his words when addressing the attack:

This line sparked a strong reaction in the House. He pressed further, saying that “whatever our differences, whatever our disagreements, we remain united in our commitment to defending democracy.”
He turned to history. Charles stressed that he was the 19th British sovereign to follow American affairs with “daily attention” and that ties between the two nations date back more than four centuries, not 250 years. He traced the shared democratic heritage through English common law, Magna Carta and the Bill of Rights of 1689, pointing out that the United States Supreme Court Historical Society found Magna Carta cited in at least 160 Supreme Court cases.

He directly acknowledged the friction of the Founding Era: “The very principle on which your Congress was founded – no taxation without representation – was both a fundamental disagreement between us, and at the same time, a shared democratic value that you inherited from us. » Then: “Our partnership was born from a protest, but is no less strong.”
He invoked the words spoken by President Trump during his state visit to Britain last fall:

Charles turned directly to NATO and the war in Ukraine. As this year marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, he drew a straight line between that moment of alliance and the current war in Eastern Europe:
King Charles III: “When NATO first invoked Article 5… in the face of terror, we answered the call together, as our people have done for over a century… that same unwavering resolve is necessary for the defense of Ukraine…” pic.twitter.com/VM5ztJta1s

The UK has committed to a sustained increase in defense spending since the Cold War. Britain and the United States are building F-35s together. The two countries, along with Australia, launched what Charles called “the most ambitious submarine program in history” through AUKUS. Thousands of US military personnel are stationed in the UK; British personnel serve in 30 US states.
On the economic front, Charles cited $430 billion in annual trade and $1.7 trillion in mutual investment, and highlighted new agreements in nuclear fusion, quantum computing, AI and drug discovery as the next frontier of shared prosperity.
It ended where it started, with the 250th anniversary:
King Charles III: “To the United States of America, on the occasion of your 250th anniversary, may our two countries rededicate themselves to each other in the selfless service of our peoples and all the peoples of the world. God bless the USA and God bless the UK. » pic.twitter.com/YhicV75ml9

He urged the two countries to “rededicate themselves” to each other. The alliance is not a given, Charles argued; it is something that must be chosen, and in a world he called “more unstable and more dangerous” than the one Queen Elizabeth addressed from the same House in 1991, that choice matters more than ever.
