These 6 movies are perfect unconventional Christmas treats

There is no shortage of iconic Christmas-focused films. From unique takes on folklore built around the holiday to heartwarming takes on the innocence of family and childhood, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to finding holiday-friendly films. However, there are also plenty of examples of films that forgo tradition to frame the season in a new light, from blending genres to exploring the holidays from new perspectives.
Despite traditions to the contrary, these films can often showcase the lessons of the holiday season better than most mainstream feature films. If you’re looking for films that break tradition while still keeping a festive heart, here are my personal recommendations for unconventional holiday hits.

Anna and the Apocalypse
When it comes to the holiday season, many films incorporate musical numbers to convey Christmas cheer. However, few films have added such a touch Anna and the Apocalypse a, bringing together festive cheer and the rise of the undead into one film. In Anna and the ApocalypseElla Hunt’s titular student is in her final year of school, but a sudden zombie outbreak collides with her and her friend’s teenage drama over the holiday season.
With just a glance, Anna and the Apocalypse could look like an incredibly bloated movie with a Frankenstein-a combination of musical numbers, gore and teenage angst, but it all fits together beautifully for a wild but strangely cohesive production. As the world literally collapses around them, Anna and her loved ones grow closer despite their own personal struggles and the overwhelming hordes of flesh eaters, underscoring the value of family.
Paired with catchy musical numbers and an arsenal of Christmas-themed undead destruction tools, Anna and the Apocalypse is an absurd yet heartfelt take on familiar tropes that can act as a perfect palate cleanser amid more traditional holiday programming.

Violent night
The undead aren’t the only threats you might encounter during the holiday season. In Violent nighta group of mercenaries take the wealthy Lightstone family hostage in their home in hopes of stealing their fortune. In times of need, young Trudy Lightstone (Leah Brady) picks up the walkie-talkie her father told her is a direct line to Santa himself and calls for help, along with a cynical, but battle-ready and good-hearted Saint Nick, played by Stranger Things“David Harbour, responds.
Despite an incredibly wild premise, Violent night never feels like it’s relying solely on its action gimmick, Santa. The functionality looks like a mix of Alone at home And Die harddelivering mature, full-throttle creative violence that incorporates Santa’s arsenal of magical abilities alongside a wholesome narrative that aims to bring Trudy’s holiday wish to life. With a fairly simple story, Violent night is an ideal and easy treat that you can watch during the holiday season.

The Godfathers of Tokyo
The almost unlimited creative freedom that animation offers has given many filmmakers the opportunity to bring fantastical Christmas stories to life. Despite this, popular anime director Satoshi Kon’s holiday-based approach The Godfathers of Tokyo stands as an underrated encapsulation of the best the season has to offer. On Christmas Eve, three homeless people find a newborn baby in the trash and set out to reunite the child with his parents.
Although relatively more grounded than Kon’s other, often darker, animated films, there is a sense of wonder in The Godfathers of Tokyo this makes it perfect for the holiday season. In their quest to find the baby’s family, Hana, Miyuki and Gin find themselves drawn into so many lives across different levels of society, breaking down class and language barriers and ultimately expanding their little family with these individuals as they try to do the right thing. In an age where goodwill toward all is regularly preached, The Godfathers of Tokyo fully shows what the powers of kindness and community can achieve.

Krampus
The holiday season also brings its share of challenges, as not everything can go as planned. Between family disagreements, searching for the perfect gift, and the pressure to deliver the perfect day, the stress of the season can easily overwhelm you. As such, Krampus can provide some catharsis by putting these difficult experiences on screen and then adding a touch of horror that will remind you of the holiday spirit in its twisted way.
In the seasonal horror film, a young boy is frustrated and pushed to his limits by his dysfunctional family, leading him to reject the holiday spirit and inadvertently summon the titular creature to terrorize his home. As Krampus descends on the family, the character uses monstrous toys inspired by Christmas iconography to eliminate each member.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by vacation pressure, Krampus balances an embrace of the season’s traditional iconography with a cathartic send-up of the worst experiences you might encounter to remind you why good matters.

The leftovers
Although it may not be as fantastic as Krampus, The leftovers is another feature that breaks down the usual veneer in which the holidays are wrapped. In the 2023 comedy-drama, Paul Giamatti’s Paul Hunham is a scorned teacher who must supervise a group of students who stay at the all-boys boarding school he works at, including Dominic Sessa’s troubled young Angus Tully. Isolated alongside cafeteria manager Mary Lamb, played by Da’Vine Joy Randolph, the experience allows the student and teacher to know each other and understand the demons that torment them.
The leftovers is a fantastically done feature. Although its characters’ struggles aren’t tied to the season, its Christmas setting adds an extra layer. Angus and Mary come from broken homes and each suffers trauma that haunts them, while Hunham is stuck in his position due to past mistakes. Despite their dire situation, these three form a fleeting family, confide in each other and perhaps even change for the better.

Die hard
No list of unconventional vacation mainstays would be complete without Die hard. Bruce Willis plays police officer John McClane in this 1988 action icon, as an invitation to his ex-wife’s work Christmas party at Nakatomi Plaze sees him become entangled in an alleged terrorist attack led by Alan Rickman’s Hans Gruber. Between memorable one-liners and iconic action beats, Die hard has more than earned its status as an influential part of pop culture.
Although moviegoers may wonder if Die hard is a Christmas movie, I believe that wholeheartedly. Alongside Christmas being such a huge part of the film, from the dialogue to the gags to the soundtrack, John McClane’s arc is an action-packed take on the familiar seasonal trope of a work-focused father driven to recognize what matters most during the holiday season. As such, Die hard fully embraces the holiday spirit in more than just dress, and something would seem lost without that layer of festive cheer.
