The inhabitants of New York must live in a state of anxiety, because their metropolis has just been ceded to political neophyte Zohran Mamdani. Even those who enthusiastically voted for the avowed democratic socialist must exercise caution that permeates their enthusiasm. It is astonishing how quickly all the warnings launched against this man, described as racist or demonized, are already coming to fruition.

His inauguration was an apt metaphor for his socialist agenda, as there was no food service and no one had the foresight to provide portable toilets for the crowd. Even a glance at the way he organizes his office reveals a hesitation to pump the brakes. His lead lawyer is Ramzi Kassem, a lawyer who defended an al-Qaeda terrorist and an anti-Israel spokesman. He hired as chief of the NYFD an intersectional woman who had never been a firefighter(anyone). He created the position of deputy mayor in charge of economic justice (nothing subversive with this title), occupied by Julie Su, appointed by Biden and who failed. And now we see his tenant advocate, who said owning a home was an act of white supremacy, was confronted with the fact that his parents lived in a posh mansion.

So yes, there is absolutely no surprise that in one week, Mamdani’s mandate is already down. But there was another small event that perfectly describes his corrupt state of mind, although extremely insignificant. It’s not a serious issue or even one that 98 percent of people care about, but he laid out many of his issues here as he took action – over the FIFA World Cup ticketing issues.

As has been pointed out several times, the upcoming FIFA World Cup here in the United States is supposed to be a big deal. Organizers face the real challenge of American apathy toward this sporting event, but we are told to worry about it. And now Mamdani has seen fit to act.

The problem is that ticket prices for the games are beyond exorbitant; they are close to the ransom price. The newly appointed mayor therefore decided to act in favor of football supporters.

That he sees the need to get involved in this so-called problem speaks to the instinctive mindset that every social issue must involve government involvement. In fact, he believes that the State must be injected into all facets of social life, and this headlong rush makes him unconscious of various realities.

He believes he can dictate ticket prices, as if that is consistent with his other freebie proposals, like free commuter rail, rent control, and government-run grocery stores. Unfortunately for him, the World Cup is not a government operation and therefore operates outside of its utopian mandates. This is what happens when someone considers the free market anathema to their desires; reality becomes an inconvenience to those operating in a realm of theoretical ideals.

Another worrying detail that escaped him: the games in the region are not even taking place in his jurisdiction. Select qualifying games, as well as the championship game, will be played at the stadium shared by the New York Giants and New York Jets, located in East Rutherford, New Jersey. But he won’t let that interfere with his “for the people” collective. He wants this match to be accessible “to all New Yorkers”, even though the stadium only has a capacity of just over 80,000 seats. This impacted thinking should put local NFL teams on alert.

It has been astonishing to see how, already, there are more than cracks in the facade of this administration. It was more like hammering in a nail to hang a piece of art, only to have the whole wall fall over because it was never properly anchored on the first day. Good luck to those who remain in New York; it has only been a week into the Mamdani administration.
