This 8BitDo Retro wireless ‘mecha’ keyboard is just $63 today

8BitDo is a surprisingly good mechanical keyboard, even if it’s shrouded in various nostalgia bait. The retro design offers a good wireless connection, premium materials, very good switches and hot-swap capability, all for a dog. Today you can get it for just $62.39 if you agree with one Mecha Break: Panther colors. This makes it both a mechanical keyboard and a mecha keyboard, of course.
I’ll be honest, I don’t really know Mecha Break. The trailer looked amazing as a release Gundam-excess of style, but the free multiplayer game is a great way to make my eyes shine. That said, this version of the 8BitDo keyboard looks pretty awesome. The frosted black clear plastic has great retro appeal, it comes with RGB that glows, and you get a bunch of alternative touches. Despite the fact that the oversized NES buttons don’t really fit the mecha anime theme, you get those too.
The keyboard is functionally identical to the one I reviewed a few years ago: the only difference is the addition of RGB lights, ABS keycaps to view them, and the replacement of the Kailh BOX White clickable switches with “Glaze Jellyfish Pro” linear switches. I don’t know what that means (switch colors stopped matching anything years ago), but gamers might prefer the linear option. And the plugs are still hot-swappable, so you can replace them at will if they don’t do it for you.
This is a damn good deal! If my house wasn’t full of keyboards, I’d probably pick one up and squint to convince myself it’s a Enders Zone design. The price is so good, I said.
