A Macedonian startup brings a new type of ice cream in the United States, hoping to change the way people think of dessert and happy hour.

Wice, which mixes real wine with ice cream, announced that it would open its headquarters in the United States in Austin, Texas, while it is developing on the American market.

The company claims that its ice cream contains up to 50% real wine, using a owner method which maintains the intact alcohol content while maintaining a creamy texture.

“A simple question”

“We have seen the opportunity to combine two beloved indulgences – Wine and Ice Cream – in a new experience that feels both sophisticated and playful,” said the founder and CEO of Wice Sofija Daceva Nowsweek in an email.

“It all started with a simple question: where can I buy wine ice? Then, this curiosity has become a mission.”

Unlike typical wine -growing cream that loses most of its alcohol during transformation, Wice says it has developed a process that reconciles the low free freezing point with the structure of traditional ice.

The result is a frozen dessert that apparently retains the alcohol content of wine, allowing customers to enjoy a dessert that can really offer a slight buzz while offering riesling flavors, Merlot and other varieties of wine.

What is different

Wice is trying to stand out on the alcohol -cluttered ice cream market using a proprietary process which keeps up to 50% real wine content, far exceeding alcohol levels that are generally found in other alcoholic ice cream products.

While most watered ice contains between 1% and 5% of alcohol in volume, which requires multiple portions to feel effects – the Wice method aims to preserve alcohol from wine while reaching the consistency of ice cream.

“It’s Wice’s secret,” said Daceva.

“Although the combination of wine and ice, or the creation of wine sorbets seems attractive, the process is complex.”

The founder added that Wice does not compromise the texture of the ice cream to maintain 50% wine.

“It took years of experimentation to find this balance and we are proud that we have come so far,” she said.

Daceva said that was what brought the business to Austin.

“In addition, Austin is strategically located near the headquarters of industry leaders like Whole Foods and only one hour from weekly-two retail giants that set the tone for food trends across the country,” she added.

“While we are not yet on their shelves, being in their backyard inspires us to think big and to be daring in the execution.”

Wice ice cream flavors include Riesling / Vanilla / Raspberry and Merlot / Chocolate / Sour Cherry. The company also offers two sorbets: Lemon Spriz (Chardonnay and Lemon) as well as Mimosa Sorbet (Riesling, Orange and Mint).
