A 13-year-old boy who may have “idolized the previous mass shooters” was arrested after the police found a large collection of firearms and the writings of “mass shooting scenarios” in his home in Washington, the authorities announced.
Friday afternoon, the police were informed of the boy, who would have “ideas for school shooters”, “threatened to kill” and said that he had access to firearms, according to the Sheriff’s office in the county of Pierce, which includes Tacoma.
Police searched the boy’s home early Saturday morning. The sheriff’s office said that the authorities had found a “large quantity” of secure and unmarked firearms; “Magazines loaded with school shooting writings on them;” And the clothes and the writings which reinforce a “typical mass shooting scenario”.
It looks very much like the police found afterwards when a mass shooting has already happened; This time, at least they found it before this child could make his plans.
The deputy Carly Cappetto with the Sheriff’s Bureau of the County of Pierce told the ABC News authorities had found 23 firearms inside the house – many of which seem to be long house cannons using 3D printed rooms.
The teenager was accused of attempted threat of bombing / injuring a school, illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of fireworks, according to court documents. He must have the court on Monday.
According to Cappetto, the boy’s parents were not charged at that time.
Note the 3D printing angle; It is a genius that does not return to the bottle and will only present more headache for the police as technology improves. Of course, this also cancels a large part of the arguments for the laws on the control of firearms; If a basement 3D printing configuration can produce firearms, there can be control. But it’s a discussion for another time. The teenager also had equipment for fireworks and explosives. It is not yet clear how or where he obtained one of these articles, or if his parents were aware of his collection and his strange obsession.

The question that this raises concerns, as the report notes, this young man had “ideations of shooting of the school” and the role of the non-stop media cycle in this. He had been planning something for some time. His social media accounts are strewn with photos of him holding him firearms and sending a message to his “fascination with recent school fire / mass attacks”. He had rifle magazines with messages referring to previous mass shots, including shootings at Colombine High School in Colorado. Was he really inspired by the media coverage of these events?
Admittedly, neither the inherited media nor the new media can ignore these horrors when they occur, but sometimes one wonders if the non-stop media blitz which accompanies these events does not inspire copies. It is a difficult to wire needle.
In this case, at least, the potential shooter had left, and what could have been another horrible event was avoided. We will take this good news for a change.
