I never thought learning a language could be fun and addictive until I found Duolingo

At school I learned to speak French and German, although much of what my teachers taught me became dead matter in my brain, forever unrecoverable. Every time I vacation in France or Spain, I’m frustrated by how little I remember and how lost I feel as a foreign speaker.
When I was studying languages 25-30 years ago, there were no help apps or video calling technology to communicate with language experts around the world. Instead, language learning involved a lot of listening and repetition, with very little else. I mean no disrespect to my teachers, but I think there was a better way.
It was 22 years after leaving school that I discovered Hubbub and I was quickly able to improve my French and even learn new words. More recently, Duolingo has been my favorite language app, mainly because I took the math class with my daughter and learned Japanese at the same time.

This is part of a regular series of articles exploring the apps we couldn’t live without. Read them all here.
Duolingo is a fun app for learning over 40 languages with quick, bite-sized lessons. Each lesson guides you through speaking, reading, listening and writing to develop your vocabulary and grammar skills. It’s one of the most attractive and well-designed apps I’ve ever used, from the bright, colorful graphics to the sound and haptic effects. I would recommend it to everyone.
The Duolingo Philosophy
Duolingo uses a “Path” system that looks like a long scrolling snake. Each circle on the path is a level, and each level contains a set of lessons, usually between 2 and 6. Advancing a level is as simple as successfully completing all the lessons in that circle. You’ll find that each lesson focuses on a specific theme, with scheduled repetition designed to cement learning.
To complement regular review and repetition, the course also has “custom practice” circles, usually with a dumbbell icon, which require you to review older material before you can unlock new topics. This spaced repetition may make it seem like Duolingo is sending you back to basics, but it’s how they ensure the words actually stick in your long-term memory.
Fun and enriching language learning
Duolingo’s learning approach is simple and engaging. Learners are presented one question at a time, with enough variety in question types to maintain interest. The languages are spoken by native speakers, which not only contributes to authenticity but also ensures that you get the best pronunciation possible.
Answering each question correctly results in encouraging sound effects and even haptics to reinforce that you’ve succeeded. If, on the other hand, you answered incorrectly, the application will store all these errors and present them to you at the end of the lesson. This prevents users from rushing through content and moving on to more advanced content before they’re actually ready.
Sometimes learning languages through apps can lack information and nuances when it comes to vocabulary and grammar. That’s why I was happy to find an “Explain My Answer” feature that provides additional details about what you’re learning, puts words in context, and is especially helpful in understanding why you made a mistake.
To help keep learners motivated, Duolingo also offers a range of rewards, including daily quests such as scoring 90% in a lesson or spending 10 minutes learning. You can also view your position in the leaderboards and compete with other learners.
Get the most out of Duolingo
The free version of Duolingo is ideal for around ten minutes of learning per day and for occasional users who need to learn the basics. If you try to go beyond that, you’ll quickly find that you run out of energy, which is the app’s currency for answering questions.
To remove the friction of the free version, you can upgrade to Super Duolingo and get unlimited energy, ad-free, and personalized review sessions. The upgrade costs $12.99/£10.99 per month.
If you really want to maximize your learning experience, then you will need to upgrade to Duolingo Max. The top-tier subscription offers AI tools, role-playing games, and video calls. This is aimed at intermediate learners who need a safe space to practice.
So whether you need to brush up on a language from your childhood or want to learn a new language, why not download Duolingo on iOS And Android.
