-INITIAL STORY-
Hello everyone.
We’re in the middle of one of the hottest March days on record in Dayton, as temperatures reached the mid-80s.
At present, the air is “capped” and there is no development of storms.
What exactly is the “cap” you ask?
Think of the “cap” like boiling water on a stove.
The lid on this pot prevents steam from rising.
In the atmosphere, a “cap” prevents the vertical development of clouds.
We hope this holds to avoid surface storms with tonight’s cold front.
This is a conditional threat and far from guaranteed. If a storm passed through the ice sheet, we might see an isolated tornado and large hail.
After the cold front passes, we expect thunderstorms to develop behind the front.
This threat remains unchanged and confidence is higher that this will occur between 6 p.m. and midnight.
The main threat is large hail, with a few hailstones 1 to 2 inches in diameter possible.

Despite temperatures falling into the 40s and 50s tonight with thunderstorms moving through, large hail remains possible due to elevated instability behind the front.
This means that updrafts are high and create a favorable environment for large hail to become a danger.
Storms end around midnight as temperatures continue to drop.

Tomorrow morning we’ll break out the sweatshirts with temperatures near freezing.
We’re dry to start the work week, but much cooler than where we are today.
