Thousands of flights canceled at major US airports this week nationwide

Are you leaving soon? Listen.
At 40 of the country’s busiest airports, outbound and return flights will be reduced by 10% this week.

That means thousands of canceled flights, or, in other words, 200,000 fewer seats per day. The fault is a government paralysis of record duration.

The major hubs will be hit hardest: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York-JFK, Chicago O’Hare and many more. Together, these 40 airports cover about 70% of U.S. flights. So yeah, even though you’re in Hicksville, you feel it.

Your “Flightmare” survival plan
If you’re thinking of flying anywhere, here’s what you do.
- Book the first flight of the day. Yes, it’s a shame, but flights departing before 9 a.m. are about twice as likely to fly as those later in the day.
- Download your airline app NOW. It’s your fastest route to real-time bookings and alerts.
- Use the MyTSA app. Get live wait times for security checks so you don’t get stuck in a random five-hour queue that already exists.
- Check your seating chart. Strangely empty flight = higher risk of cancellation. Full flight = safer bet.
- Know your rights. If your flight is canceled or significantly delayed due to the discounts, you are legally entitled to a cash refund, not just a future credit.
- Have a plan B. One-way rental car pickups are up 20% this week. Trains or even a longer journey could save your vacation.
IMPACT OF AIRPORT CLOSURES WILL WORSE, TSA SAYS — TRAVELERS SHOULD “LEAVE EARLY” AND “BE PATIENT”
Gas prices are down (averaging around $3.08), so a road trip might really make sense.
Don’t wait. Don’t assume. Keep checking, stay flexible, and treat your trip like you would a storm warning: get ahead, not behind.

Pass this on: Do you know someone who is flying soon? Don’t leave them on the ground. Pass on this post before they end up sleeping in an airport chair with their neck at a 90 degree angle. Sharing this could save someone’s trip, vacation, or at least their sanity. And hey, we all have that friend who needs a reminder to download the airline app before getting to the boarding gate.
