Tiger Woods was arrested for driving under the influence after he appeared to cause a crash in Florida that resulted in his vehicle overturning, Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said Friday.
The sheriff confirmed at a news conference that Woods was driving at “a high rate of speed” when his vehicle collided with another car, causing his vehicle to flip onto the driver’s side. Budensiek said Woods appeared to have gotten out of the vehicle by “crawling” out of the passenger side.

Authorities said Woods “is an example of signs of impairment.” He blew “triple zeros” for alcohol but refused to take a urine test.

“DUI investigators came to the scene here, and Mr. Woods showed signs of impairment. They did several tests on him. Of course, he explained the injuries and surgeries he had. We took that into account, but they did extensive road tests,” Budensiek added.
“We really didn’t suspect that alcohol was involved in this case, and that proved true at the jail. … But when it came time for us to request a urinalysis, he refused. And so he was charged with driving while intoxicated, criminal damage to property and refusal to submit to a lawful test.”

Woods was charged with driving while intoxicated, damaging property and refusing to submit to a test, all misdemeanor charges. No one was injured, authorities said. Woods was alone in the car and crawled out of the passenger door after the crash.
“It could have been a lot worse,” Budensiek noted.

Woods competed in the TGL Championship earlier this week with his girlfriend, Vanessa Trump, and daughter, Kai, in the stands. It was his return to competitive golf after rupturing his Achilles tendon last year before the Masters.
The winner of 15 majors, including five at Augusta, has not committed to playing in this year’s Masters. President Donald Trump said on “The Five” Thursday that Woods would be at Augusta but would not play.

In 2021, he had an accident that left him with serious leg injuries that kept him from playing golf for the entire year. In 2017, he was arrested for driving under the influence, also on Jupiter Island, after taking prescription drugs.

It has been a difficult task since Woods made his final comeback in 2019 and miraculously won the green jacket again. Since then, in 14 major tournaments, he has failed to place in the top 20. This is his longest streak since failing to finish in the top 20 in the first six majors of his career in 1995 and 1996. In his last 26 majors, he has only finished in the top 20 four times.
Since finishing tied for ninth at the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open, his best finish in his 18 official events since then has been a tie for 37th at the 2020 PGA Championship.

He hasn’t competed since 2024, when he only competed in five events – the Genesis Invitational and all four majors. He withdrew from the Genesis, finished dead last at the Masters and missed the cut at the other majors.
