Tiktok intensifies his game in DMS.

Users can now send voice notes, photos and videos to direct messages on Tiktok, Techcrunch First Report and Tiktok confirmed in Mashable. Previously, users could only send Tiktok videos or SMS on DMS.

Vocal notes can last up to 60 seconds while photos and videos can come directly from a user’s camera or can be selected from the roll of your camera. Users can change photos or videos in the message before sending it too, according to Techcrunch.

To send a photo, head to your messages tab and click on the camera icon at the bottom left or the landscape icon at the bottom right. To send a vocal memo, click on the microphone icon at the bottom right. When you send a voice note, the application encourages users to “send voice messages only to trust friends. Be kind and respectful to ensure the safety of our community”.

The sending of images to DMS has been required repeatedly by Tiktok users and, as reported by NPR, the vocal notes are the new texts for young people.

“Textos can confuse the meaning and calls can trigger anxiety. But for many, short vocal recordings offer an alternative with easier low pressure,” wrote NPR in 2023. Now, two whole years later, Tiktok can finally join Imessage, Instagram DMS, Whatsapp and more messaging platforms by offering this to its users.

There are, of course, some additional confidentiality measures. You cannot send an image as a message request, which, according to Tiktok, is for user safety, according to Techcrunch. Message requests are only to share Tiktok content, vocal notes and text. DMs are only available for users over 16, and there are additional systems to protect users under the age of 18, including detection and image blocking containing nudity, Techcrunch reported.
