Yankees acquire Ryan McMahon in trade with Rockies

New York – The Yankees acquired the third Ryan McMahon of the Rockies on Friday in exchange for launchers of the Minor League Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz, the teams announced.
The Yankees assumed the rest of the McMahon contract, aged 30, which includes around $ 4.5 million for the rest of 2025 and $ 32 million in the following two seasons, a source said in ESPN.
All-Star last season, McMahon struck .217 with 16 circuits, a .717 Ops and a 127 stick withdrawals in the National League in 100 games for Colorado in 2025. After a terrible start to the season until April, it was much better, with an average of strikers from .246, 14 Home Runs and 0.804 OPS. He struck the circuits in the first two games after the stars break and another Tuesday and was underway to maintain his 20 -year -old sequence.
Defensively, McMahon is a third goal player in the golden gloves whose four withdrawals higher than the average are third of the majors this season. He joined a Yankees club which was spoiled by a botched defense, more recently Wednesday when she made four mistakes against the first place of Toronto Blue Jays.
“He had ups and downs offensively this year,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone about McMahon. “I know that during the last month, he balances the bat well, but he is a presence and he can really defend there in third row and has for several years. So we are delighted to get it.”
The third goal of Arizona Diamondbacks, Eugenio Suarez, which started on Friday with 36 circuits and an 86 MLB product points, could be the best striker before the commercial deadline of July 31, but the Yankees were not particularly aggressive by pursuing it, a source told Jeff Passan d’Espn.
While the offensive production of McMahon resulted in a 92 OPS +, which suggests that it was 8% worse than the average striker of major leagues this season, it still represents an important offensive upgrade to the third goal for New York. The Yankees had Oswald Peraza, one of the worst strikers of the majors, who has managed the third goal almost every day since the club decided to release DJ Lemahieu, another former Rockie player, earlier this month and move Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the second goal.
Peraza, while a strong defender, cut. 147 / .208 / .237 in 69 games this season. Its 24 WRC + rows last among the 310 strikers with at least 160 plaques appearances this season.
Rockies are the only organization that McMahon has known. They selected him in the second round of the 2013 draft. He made his debut four years later and became a regular in 2019. At that time, the Rockies went to the back of the NL West. This year, there are 26-76 and flirt with the most defeats in the history of major leagues.
He leaves this environment for the New York pressure cooker and a club with the aspirations of the World Series, a change that Yankees’ hope can help McMahon.
“I hope the environment is a good thing for him, that he falls into this and does not have to be the guy,” said Boone. “Go do your thing. Go find the role. But it’s our work – my work, my staff, coaches, players – to make sure they are welcome and put them as comfortable as possible.”
The price for McMahon – and its team control in the following two seasons – was a pair of launchers who did not reach double A.
Herring, 22, recorded an MPM of 1.71 in 89⅓ sleeves on 16 departures between the bottom and the High-A this season. It was a choice of sixth round of LSU in the 2024 draft.
Grosz, a choice of 11th round in 2023, experienced an MPM of 4.14 in 87 rounds in 16 games (15 departures) for High-A Hudson Valley this season.
With the third base addressed, the Yankees will continue to try to acquire launchers to strengthen both their rotation and their enclosure. Luis Gil’s return should help. The right -hander, which was released all season with a LAT injury, made its third start of rehabilitation on Wednesday. Boone said that there was “a good luck” Gil took another departure from the minors before making his debut of the season.
