The Tennessee Titans and New York Jets made headlines on Thursday when news broke on the trade sending edge rusher Jermaine Johnson to the Titans in exchange for defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat.

This rare player-for-player trade has been widely regarded as a win for both teams. New Titans head coach Robert Saleh was able to bolster the Titans’ edge unit and reunite with Johnson, a player he drafted and coveted, and the Jets received a potentially dominant nose tackle that fits their new defensive scheme.

What makes this trade even more of a winner for both sides is the salary cap ramifications. Although a first glance would show that the Jets opened up a ton of cap space by moving Johnson ($13.4 million), the reality is that Tennessee improved its defense and still leads the league in salary cap space.

The deal isn’t official until the start of the new league year, but the Titans should enter free agency with $97.1 million in overall cap space and $84.8 million in effective cap space, outpacing both the Jets ($91 million) and the Las Vegas Raiders ($91.5 million).

The move caps a busy couple of days for the Titans’ front office, which released veteran Lloyd Cushenberry and Xavier Woods on Wednesday as they continue to retool its roster.
