Donald Trump threatened on Monday to regain control of the Washington DC police service if the city did not cooperate at its mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
The president’s threat occurred a few days after the expiration of a 30 -day takeover of the Washington Metropolitan Police Service (MPD), which Trump ordered in response to his assertion that the capital knew a wave of “out of control” crime. He also ordered troops of the National Guard and federal agents, who remain present in the city.
“Mayor Muriel Bowser, who presided over this violent criminal takeover of our capital for years, informed the federal government that the metropolitan police service will no longer cooperate with ice to remove and relocate illegal foreigners. If I allowed it to happen, the crime would come back, “Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“To the people and companies in Washington, DC, do not worry, I am with you and I do not allow it to happen. I will call a national emergency and federalize, if necessary !!!”
Bowser, a democrat, earlier this month, published a decree creating a “emergency operations center” which would coordinate with several federal law enforcement organizations.
The order did not mention immigration and customs and application, whose masked agents were seen targeting suspicious undocumented immigrants across the city in the last month. At a press conference last week, the mayor stressed that the police would no longer be involved in such arrests.
“The application of immigration is not what the MPD does. And with the end of the urgency, it will not be what MPD does in the future,” she said. His administration also supported support for federal agents who patrol in the city, with Bowser writing in his decree that violent crimes had “notably decreased”.
Although the rates of violent crimes in the capital are at 30 years old, Trump on August 11 exercised a clause never used before the Washington DC domicile rule to put the police under the control of his administration for the 30 -day period authorized by law, and also ordered the national guard and the officers of several federal agencies for the application of the law.
