These are the answers that are linked to the theme. The goal of the puzzle is to find them all, including the spangram, a theme word that reaches one side of the puzzle to the other. When you have them all (I originally thought there was always eight but I learned that the number can vary), each letter in the table will be used. Here are the nonspangram answers:

The strands of today Spangram is Tyrolean. To find it, look for the Z which is three letters on the right on the lower row and end up.

Most difficult strands

Here are some of the subjects of the strands that I have found the most difficult in recent weeks.

# 1: dated slang, January 21. Maybe you didn’t even use this jargon when it was cool. The most difficult word: Phat.

# 2: Thar she blows! January 15. I guess marine biologists could suck this one. The most difficult word: Baleen or on the right.

# 3: Off the Hook, January 9. Similar to the puzzle of January 15 in that it helps to know a lot about marine creatures. Sorry, Charlie. The most difficult word: bigeye or skipjack.
