Will Wordle run out of words?
When Wordle began, creator Josh Wardle used a list of five-letter words that he had shared with his partner, selecting only words they recognized. Although that’s over 2,000 words, more than half of them have already been used.
Wordle editor-in-chief Tracy Bennett admitted that the game will eventually need to come to grips with the fact that the word list isn’t forever.
“One possibility is that we might recycle old words at some point, like when we’re nearing the end,” Bennett told a Wordle reader on TikTok.
She also said that editors could bring back all the words and reuse them, or allow plurals or past tense, which is not currently done.
Bennett has not commented on this, but it seems possible that Wordle could also expand to six-letter words. Options abound.
