Javier Mascherano has surprisingly resigned as manager of Inter Miami, just months after leading the team to its first MLS title.

In the announcement of the club’s move, Mascherano stated that he was leaving for “personal reasons”, although the announcement later clarified that his coaching staff would also leave the club.

Inter Miami said sporting director Guillermo Hoyos will take over as interim head coach.

“Above all, I would like to thank the club for the trust it has placed in me, all the employees who are part of the organization for the collective effort, but especially the players, who allowed us to experience unforgettable moments,” Mascherano said in a statement. “I will always carry with me the memory of our first star, and wherever I am, I will continue to wish the club the best for the future.”

Mascherano arrived at Inter Miami ahead of the 2025 season with many question marks, having only coached at the youth national team level with his native Argentina. Nonetheless, Mascherano and his former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi led Miami to their first MLS title, beating the Vancouver Whitecaps in last season’s final.

Inter Miami’s title defense got off to a somewhat rocky start. Miami drew their first two matches at the club’s brand new Nu Stadium, although they have won three of their five league matches this season. The biggest disappointment so far has come at the continental level, with Inter Miami eliminated from the Concacaf Champions Cup to Nashville SC in the round of 16 last month.

Mascherano has had a lot of changes to his squad since last year’s title. Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba retired, while Luís Suárez was relegated to the bench after the massive acquisition of Germán Berterame, who got off to a slow start this season.
