At first there were heavy downpours, and now the Santa Ana winds are wreaking havoc in the Southland.

The powerful gusts downed trees and power lines Monday.

In Sylmar, a family was sleeping soundly when a large branch ripped off their roof.

After dark in Sylmar, the Santa Ana winds were still howling.

It only took one burst of anger to send a tree crashing into Jezebel White’s house.

Video from the scene shows the entire tree root exposed.

“It was huge, it’s huge,” White said. “It literally felt like a tear.”

We take a look at the damage caused by Monday’s Santa Ana winds, including a tree that fell on a Tesla with two women inside and a tree that crashed into a home in Sylmar.

Surveillance video shows the moment the tree fell on the house. This happened on Monday while everyone was sleeping.

Branches tore the ceiling and destroyed one of the bedrooms.

“My brother jumped out of bed because he was literally six or five feet away from him,” White said.

White’s entire family spent hours cleaning up the mess.

“Honestly, I was pretty stunned by the amount of debris that was everywhere,” Christian Lozano said. “There are branches everywhere. They come out all the time.”

White’s family says they will continue to stay in the house while they sort out the repairs with insurance.

“I’m sincerely grateful that this didn’t hurt anyone. It was just material things that were broken and not an actual person,” White said.

The wind gusts were destructive all day.

In Orange County, a palm tree landed on a Tesla, injuring at least one person inside.

In Moorpark, the California Highway Patrol closed both directions of SR-118 for more than eight hours after trees fell on power lines.

The risk remains with more Santa Ana winds blowing Tuesday.
