Trinity Rodman signs landmark three-year Washington Spirit deal

Bonmati, winner of the Ballon d’Or in 2023, 2024 and 2025, was apparently the highest paid player before this news.

Rodman’s agent says the multi-million dollar contract will make her the highest-paid player in the world from July 1, when new amendments to the National Women’s Super League (NWSL) salary cap come into effect.

However, Spanish sources claim that the highest amount Rodman could receive under these amendments and the conversion to euros means that Bonmati will remain the highest paid player.

In 2025, the NWSL’s salary cap was $3.5 million (£2.6 million) per team.

But the league’s board of governors approved a new “high-impact player” rule in December, which allows teams to spend up to $1 million (£760,000) above the cap for players meeting certain criteria.

“Trinity is a generational player, but more importantly, she represents the future of this club and the future of women’s soccer,” said Washington Spirit owner Michele Kang.

Rodman helped Spirit win the NWSL championship in her debut season in 2021 and was named NWSL Rookie of the Year.

She has won 47 caps for the United States, scoring 11 goals since her debut in 2022.

She scored three goals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the United States won gold.
