The Triton exhibition highlights “crowns of excellence”

“Crowns of Excellence,” a photo exhibit honoring the rich cultural tradition of black headdresses, opened to the public Feb. 2 and continues through the end of the month on the upper level of the Triton College Library, 2000 5th Ave. in River Grove.

The show is a collaborative effort of the Visual Communications, Triton College Library and Cosmetology and Hairstyling programs. Around twenty photographs of students, alumni, staff and faculty will be presented. Students in the colleges’ new cosmetology and hairstyling program provided hairstyling services to participants, and the Triton College Foundation provided a grant.

“The photos you will see showcase the beauty and pride of our Triton community, and that is due to the large number of people on campus who have shown their support,” said Shekinah Lawrence, president of the Triton College Library, via press release.

The exhibit’s name comes from the CROWN Act, or Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, which “affirms the right to wear natural hair and prohibits discrimination based on hair texture or styles associated with race,” the release said.

Student Ethan Frazier, who took many of the photos for the show, said he strived to “convey the models’ confidence and pride in their hair,” according to the release. “And to also be able to help pass on an identity that I’ve carried my whole life and represent a community that I was born into is truly inspiring,” he said.

The library, located in Building A, is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
