In recent days, President Trump has angrily demanded that Republicans are passing the SAVE Act, a massive voter suppression measure that has already passed the House but almost certainly cannot pass the Senate. In a tirade on Truth Social, he threatened not to sign anything else until Senate Republicans did. This echoed a second rant demanding the same thing. After recording this episode, Trump gave a speech reaffirming this demand. But a funny thing happens: It tramples on the Republicans’ midterm message, which is all about appearing focused on the economy. We spoke to veteran Congressional expert Norman Ornstein. He explains why the SAVE ACT is such an abhorrent voter suppression measure, why it is likely doomed to failure in the Senate despite pressure from Trump, and why its demand has ensnared Republicans, given their bigoted thrall to him.
