The State Department is ordering its posts to stop processing all Afghan national visas, according to an internal document obtained by the Daily Caller.

Two National Guard members were shot and killed Wednesday in Washington, D.C., apparently by an Afghan national who entered the country in 2021. West Virginia National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom died Thursday from injuries sustained in the attack while Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe remains in critical condition. Following the tragedy, Trump demanded that every foreigner who entered the country during former President Joe Biden’s Afghanistan withdrawal be re-evaluated.

The State Department is taking action in accordance with the president’s words and ordering the cancellation of all pending Afghan national visa applications, according to the internal document obtained by the caller.

“The Trump Administration has no higher priority than keeping Americans safe and has launched a whole-of-government effort to defend America’s national security,” principal deputy spokesman Tommy Pigott said in a statement. “That’s why the State Department took action today to suspend visa processing for Afghan nationals seeking entry to the United States, following a horrific terrorist attack against the National Guard.”

Trump addressed the shooting Wednesday.

“We must now reexamine every foreigner who has entered our country from Afghanistan under Biden, and we must take every step necessary to ensure the expulsion of any foreigner from any country who does not belong here, or provide a benefit to our country if they can’t love our country, we don’t want them,” Trump said after the shooting.

“America will never flinch or give in in the face of terror, and at the same time, we will not allow ourselves to be deterred from the mission that the military was so nobly accomplishing,” he continued.

Trump promised in a TruthSocial article Friday to end migration from all “third world countries” in response to the shootings.

Rahmanullah Lakanwal is believed to have carried out Wednesday’s attack, and it was reported that he had previously worked with the US government, including the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). He arrived in the United States in 2021 as part of the Biden administration’s “Operation Allies Welcome,” which resettled Afghans who had assisted U.S. forces. More than 180,000 Afghans have been relocated and resettled in America since the withdrawal of the U.S. military from Afghanistan in August 2021, according to a 2024 statement from the State Department. Lakanwal applied for asylum in 2024 and was granted it in April 2025, Reuters reported, citing documents.

The suspect reportedly shouted “Allahu akbar!” » before opening fire with a revolver, reported independent journalist Julio Rojas.

“This heinous assault was an act of evil, an act of hatred and an act of terror. It was a crime against our entire nation. It was a crime against humanity,” Trump said during his Wednesday speech.
