New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani campaigned by promising:permanently eliminate the fare for each urban bus.
Mamdani’s chances of keeping this promise seem increasingly unlikely, thanks in part to a new proposal from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT). The department “wants to prevent big cities that receive federal funds from providing free public transportation,” Politico reported Tuesday, citing a USDOT proposal that would be included in an upcoming surface transportation bill. The proposal would apply to transportation agencies in areas with high populations (more than 200,000 residents) and large bus fleets (more than 100). This puts New York City directly in the crosshairs of the proposal.
