On Monday, President Trump appeared to cryptically blame the murders of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner on the Hollywood icon’s liberal political positions.

The president ridiculed Rob Reiner as “tortured and troubled” and claimed he was killed because of anger over his harsh criticism of Trump.

Without citing any evidence, Trump said the killing was “apparently due to the anger he provoked in others because of his massive, inflexible, incurable affliction with a crippling mental illness known as Trump Derangement Syndrome, sometimes called TDS,” he wrote on his social media site. “He was known for driving people crazy with his furious obsession with President Donald J. Trump. »

Trump added that Reiner’s “obvious paranoia reached new heights as the Trump administration exceeded all goals and expectations.”

Contrary to Trump’s claims, there is no indication that politics played a role in the Reiners’ murders, nor any reason to believe that their liberal beliefs could have served as a foil or justification for the shocking murders.

Trump’s outburst came the morning after the Reiners’ bodies were found in their suburban Los Angeles mansion and just minutes before police announced they had charged the Reiners’ troubled son, Nick Reiner, in connection with their murders.

The Reiners were both outspoken about their liberal politics and were prolific donors to Democratic candidates and causes. They have also regularly criticized Trump’s policies, including his controversial crackdown on undocumented immigrants.

Their killings sparked an outpouring of grief from friends and political leaders, including statements of condolence from former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Kamala Harris and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).

Republicans have remained mostly silent, but no other prominent Republican Party leaders have joined Trump in seeking to blame Reiner for his own murder and that of his wife of 36 years.
