Manisha Krishnan: Yeah, this season has … I mean, this is the first time I have been watching in 15 years. But this season was quite perfect. It is almost as if they read the cables and satiated everything. I have the impression that if Trump and Eric Adams started a talk show, it might be the catacombe.

Zoë Schiffer: I like that.

Manisha Krishnan: Because everyone would find it funny through political lines.

Zoë Schiffer: So maybe South Park will save us after all. Change speed literally for our next story. Our colleague Aarian Marshall reported that Tesla had encouraged the sleepy drivers to use the complete self-commissioned mode or the FSD on their cars. Unlike its name, this feature does not really allow cars to behave themselves, it simply helps drivers to perform a variety of basic tasks. The car manual indicates that the driver must be ready to take over at any time. But drivers report that messages by car seem to tell them to do the opposite. Messages say things like “Drowseness detected, stay focused with the FSD”. Or, “Lane Drift detected, let FSD help you so that you can stay focused.”

Manisha Krishnan: Yeah, it seems dangerous. Looks like they are a bit like: “Hey, do you want to take a nap now? Let FSD launch.” No, they should explode music, explode AC, make a spin class in there to wake you up. Tesla has made changes to its technology to make it more difficult for inattentive drivers to use the FSD. In 2021, the company began to use driving monitor cameras by car to determine where their drivers were paying attention enough when using the FSD.

Zoë Schiffer: This seems to be in contradiction with their past efforts to establish more security around their autonomous characteristics. It’s like a rather delicate moment for Tesla. For years, the company has been accused of making products that can be allegedly defective in certain ways. Last August, a jury from Florida noted that the company was partly responsible for a 2019 accident that killed a 22 -year -old woman. The accident occurred when a Tesla Model driver used an older version of the company driver software called Autopilot. At the same time, Elon Musk and the company’s board of directors put FSD at the center of the automotive manufacturers’ strategy. Musk therefore promised that the functionality would turn into a really autonomous driving system by the end of the year, although it seems unlikely. And Elon Musk is generally known to promise fairly aggressive chronologies which, then he blows again and again. One more before going to break. Wired Science Reporter, Emily Mullin reported this week that scientists made human eggs from skin cells and use them to form embryos. This is a huge affair because it could mean a new way of treating infertility for people who want children. But to be clear, none of the embryos was used to try to establish a pregnancy. And it is unlikely that they have developed much further than the uterus. But it is always a big problem because it could one day be used as an alternative to IVF.
