The past few weeks have been particularly brutal for the electric vehicle industry – and for everyone who believes electric vehicles are the future. Thanks to slowing demand and political whiplash, automakers are going on an electric vehicle killing spree, killing off a host of promising new models. The graveyard of electric vehicles is growing by the minute.

And unfortunately, as is often the case, the focus seems to be on affordable models that can attract new customers. Meanwhile, ugly electric vehicles that cost too much and do nothing to advance electric vehicle adoption continue to darken our highways.

None of these vehicles were perfect, but they appear to represent a trend among automakers to abandon cheaper, lower-margin electric vehicles in favor of larger, more expensive vehicles. GM couldn’t throw a life jacket on the Chevrolet Bolt, but it will still happily direct you to the Cadillac Escalade IQ, which starts at around $127,000 and weighs about as much as a small moon.

None of these vehicles were perfect, but they appear to represent a trend among automakers to abandon cheaper, lower-margin electric vehicles in favor of larger, more expensive vehicles.

Consider the Cybertruck, widely considered the most hated car in the world. Cybertruck sales fell 48% in 2025 from the previous year, according to Kelley Blue Book’s annual electric vehicle sales reports. A more lenient automaker would drive the angular truck into the desert and put one right between the headlights. But not Elon Musk. He may not have much interest in running a car company anymore, but he seems more than happy to continue selling his ugly, stupid truck. Fortunately, there aren’t many takers anymore.

Additionally, Cybertrucks continue to be vandalized. Long after the anti-Musk protests have died down, people are still finding time to resolve their anger issues over Tesla’s worst product. Just yesterday, a 67-year-old woman was arrested in North Carolina for using a board containing nails to scratch someone’s Cybertruck. People Really hate this car.

In a just world, Musk would declare his mission to make an “apocalypse-proof” vehicle a success and let the Cybertruck program fade into the sunset. We all know he has it in him; The Model S and X, two other low-selling electric vehicles well past their peak, were recently launched. The problem with the Cybertruck is that Musk has invested too much of his own stock in it, touting it as Tesla’s “best vehicle” and “the apotheosis of design and utility.” But when the future of your futuristic vehicle looks as bleak as that of the Cybertruck, it’s probably time to throw in the towel.
