A suspect is in custody after a standoff with Fresno police in the area of Clinton and West avenues in central Fresno Sunday evening.

Fresno police told Action News that an officer approached a man who was acting suspiciously in an alley directly behind me and after a brief struggle, the suspect then fired at police.

Police said two officers returned fire as the suspect began to run away.

At least one of those bullets struck the suspect, who then barricaded himself in a nearby carport.

Action News was on scene before his arrest, which took place more than an hour after the first shooting, and saw police attempt to keep the area clear of traffic as SWAT negotiators and other authorities arrived on scene.

However, the suspect eventually surrendered without further incident.

The suspect’s exact condition has been released, but police say he is stable and currently recovering at Community Regional Medical Center.

Although authorities say the officers involved were not injured, at least one of them approached.

“That bullet actually hit the cap that the officer was wearing. By the grace of God, no officers were injured tonight, but it did hit his cap,” Deputy Chief Rob Beckwhit said.

Police say the two officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, per procedure.

They have not identified the suspect, except that he is a man in his 40s.
