1,900-year-old ‘treasure’ found in Roman-era family’s scorched house in Romania

Archaeologists in Romania have uncovered a melted metal treasure in the remains of the burned house of a family in the Roman era.
The treasure, which consists of coins and metal ornaments, probably belonged to an important family about 1,900 years ago, according to a translated statement of the National Museum of History of Romania, which led research.
The metals melted and merged during fire, preserving the shape of the wooden box in which they were stored, according to the museum. Individual parts have also kept their circular forms, although they have corroded over the centuries.
The other artefacts found in the same layer on the site included ceramic vessels, inscriptions and objects manufactured in bronze, iron, glass and stone, reported the declaration.
The house itself was “sumptuous”, according to the press release, with a paving of limestone and painted plaster walls. These details suggest that the accommodation housed an elite family.
Archaeologists dated preliminary the artifacts of the second or third century AD, during a period of the Roman Empire known as the principal. Meanwhile, starting with the reign of Augustus César in 27 BC and ending in AD 284, the Roman society was restructured to concentrate power under a single emperor while retaining some of the external appearances of a republic.
The building and the archaeological remains inside “are important testimonies for the reconstruction of a moment in the life of the old fortress during the main period,” said the declaration translated. The results, alongside other discoveries of the site which include roads, water pipes and an oven, help archaeologists to rebuild what histria could have looked like during the Roman Empire.
The artifacts are now part of the National Museum of History of the Collections of Romania. There, they will undergo an additional survey, restoration and conservation before being placed. The museum has not yet announced when the artefacts are posted publicly.
