2026 NCAA Tournament championship: UConn vs. Michigan showdown closes March Madness with epic clash
The 2026 NCAA Tournament schedule has come to a conclusion, and while teams across the country strive to play on the final Monday night of the season, only No. 1 seed Michigan and No. 2 seed UConn will play for college basketball’s ultimate goal. The game came after a Saturday night in which the Wolverines and Huskies faced their semifinal opponents in a more lopsided fashion than was expected based on pregame Final Four prospects.
UConn was actually an underdog in the first national semifinal, but started hot on offense and successfully defended that early lead with a victory that was far less stressful than the 19-point comeback against Duke in the Elite Eight. Michigan also put Arizona in a tough spot in the first half, taking a lopsided lead that left plenty of room to run even as a championship-caliber Wildcats team made its predictable effort to get back into the game.
Michigan started as a 7.5-point favorite in the game against the Huskies, which takes place Monday at 8:50 p.m. ET. at Lucas Oil Stadium.

What are the stakes in Huskies vs Wolverines
Michigan is 0-4 in national championship games since winning it all with Steve Fisher in 1989, losing two titles with the Fab Five (1992-93) in addition to second-place finishes in 2013 and 2018. Although the Wolverines are favored in the matchup, there is one aspect of this program that shakes off years of frustration on the final Monday night of the season. Look for plenty of contributions from the Fab Five, Michigan luminaries and the potential for a celebration for the future of this program under Dusty May.
If UConn ends up wrapping up an all-time tournament run, it will win the program’s third national championship in four years. This brings up the dynasty discussion, as the Huskies would join the company of John Wooden’s UCLA and Adolph Rupp’s Kentucky in terms of titles per year. We’ve already seen UConn have one of the best moments of the tournament with the near Elite Eight win over Duke, but now Hurley is one win away from joining the all-time company in sports history.

Michigan won its eighth straight national semifinal game by toppling Arizona in the Final Four on Saturday night. Yaxel Lendeborg’s latest injury raises burning questions you’d rather avoid heading into a title game, but the Wolverines’ proof of depth has kept Dusty May’s team elite even after losing several key players to injury. Lendeborg, the Big Ten Player of the Year, also committed to being ready to play Monday night, adding to the momentum of a Wolverines team that just won each of its NCAA Tournament games by double digits.

How the Huskies Got Here
While UConn is back in the Final Four for the third time in four years, this season’s team has been on a different path and performance than the title-winning teams in 2023 and 2024. Dan Hurley’s 2026 team has faced much tighter margins, excelling in close games instead of the double-digit games of previous campaigns. They also had one of the toughest possible runs outside of the East Region facing the top seed in every round, and while the Huskies beat a No. 3 seed in Illinois in the national semifinals, it was a Fighting Illini team that was favored to win.

How the Wolverines and Huskies compete
Michigan’s performance in the NCAA tournament suggested that Dusty May’s team could be at a higher level than everyone else in the sport all season long. Aside from a few missteps, the Wolverines asserted their strengths with their size and here in the tournament they had better-than-expected three-point shooting. A respectable perimeter game mixed with strong performance from Aday Mara and Morez Johnson truly makes for a great team elite when it comes to the Wolverines, but UConn has a window to disrupt the Wolverines’ dominance by battling size with Tarris Reed and guard play with Solo Ball and Silas Demery Jr.. The Huskies don’t have an opportunity to take the lead against Michigan’s bigs on paper, but Dan Hurley and his team was content to cope with Illinois’ size and found ways to succeed.
