President Donald Trump announced plans to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization after several groups increased warnings in recent months that the Islamist group is gaining a foothold in the United States.

The Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist organization founded in Egypt, gained access to government agencies, helped advise U.S. civil rights policy, infiltrated educational institutions, and created a vast social media footprint, the report said, while highlighting the belief that the group allegedly targeted U.S. government agencies for infiltration, including the State Department, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice, through career appointments and advisory roles.

The ISGAP report delves deeper into alleged terrorist ties within the group as well as various funding sources from countries like Qatar, while demonstrating that al-Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood “share the strategic objective” of establishing an Islamic state government through Sharia law and differ only in tactics where the Brotherhood’s “progressiveness” allows it to maintain ideological continuity with militant jihad while avoiding direct confrontation.

In addition to declaring the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization, ISGAP says it has worked to bring together scholars and experts on the subject in an effort to press Congress to act on the details of the report.
