Two friends visited Banff National Park in Canada on June 19 when they met a dangerous shine that killed one.
Hamza Benhilal, 33, and his friend Khaled El Gamal, 28, were on the hiking track of Bow Glacier Falls at Calgary National Park when the side of the cliff collapsed around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 19. Benhilal was killed in the accident.
Benhilal, originally from Morocco, and El Gamal, from Egypt, heard a strong sound, which said that El Gamal sounded like a storm. He then turned to look at the source of the sound and saw a large rock fall from the mountain and then break into pieces.
“I freeze like a deer in the headlights,” El Gamal told Canadian press, adding that he had been broken from his trance when Benhilal shouted to run. “He saved me, shouting.”
“He shouted aloud, telling me to run, run, to run. And that’s what helped me get my senses and start running, because I was in shock. It seemed to be a film scene, just seeing rocks from the side,” El Gamal told CTV News.
“It was not for him, I would have just held my floor in shock while freezing. I don’t know, my mind just disengaged at that time,” he said. “And he shouted and told me to run, run, run. And then I survived.”
El Gamal was able to exceed the flow of rock but lost sight of his friend.
“The rocks were obviously so fast that they fell,” he told CTV. “So, they hit my legs and I fell on the ground. And then all that I remember is that I hid my head, I covered my head with my arms, I just kept my back towards the rocks and I continued to suffer from rocky falls. Rock after rock hit my back.”
“I was bleeding and looked around,” El Gamal told the Canadian press. “I was soaked with blood and barely managing myself,” he said, noting that he also vomited several times. “It was the most painful experience I had.”
El Gamal has undergone non -critical injuries, including fractures from his scapula and pelvis, as well as cuts and tears on his face, shoulder, back, legs and feet.
El Gamal left the path to find help for his friend, but he quickly realized that no one could locate Benhilal. “I kept telling them, my friend, where is my friend? And no one could locate him. No one could see him. We did not know what had happened before we were told that he had been found under the rubble there,” he told CTV News.

Another person, the university’s retirement professor, Jutta Hinrichs, 70, was also killed by the shift in rock. Two others were injured.
El Gamal noted how useful the other hikers were when looking for Benhilal.
“Those who stayed there, rather than taking their business and going and leaving, they stayed with us by risking their own lives to support us, to spend the difficult period and remain awake and wait for the rescuers to come,” he told CTV.
“The scene is still playing in the back of our heads,” he said, adding that those who visited him in the hospital also see and feel the trauma of the situation.

El Gamal said he considered Benhilal as a “big brother”.
“He was a very, very generous and very kind person. The person you are in trouble, you continue to talk to him because he had this wisdom,” he told CTV. “I kept my hand whenever I needed advice.”
“My request is that for us to send it to Morocco,” said El Gamal. “We have been given a very big bill for funerals, which we hope that anyone would understand something to compensate for the family for their loss.”
