Trump Stands By Calling Tim Walz ‘Seriously Retarded’ Over Somalian Welfare Scandal

President Donald Trump on Sunday called Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz “retarded” after his state’s welfare fraud scandal involving Somalis was revealed.

Trump wrote in a Nov. 27 Truth Social article that Walz was “seriously retarded” for doing nothing to stop Somalis from funneling taxpayer dollars to the Islamic terrorist organization Al-Shabaab. The president doubled down on his remark on Air Force One, saying there was “something wrong” with Walz.

“I think there is absolutely something wrong with him,” Trump told reporters. “You know what? I think there’s something wrong with him. Anyone who would do what he did, anyone who would allow these people to come into his state and give billions of dollars to Somalia. We’re giving billions of dollars to Somalia. It’s not even a country because it doesn’t function like a country. It has a name, but it doesn’t function as a country. Yeah, there’s something wrong with Walz. Somalis in Minnesota have contributed “untold millions” of dollars to the terrorist group responsible for the deaths of at least 11 Americans in multiple attacks in East Africa. A member of the group was convicted in November 2024 of planning a 9/11-style air attack on the United States.

Trump announced Friday that he was ending the federal government’s Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program for tens of thousands of Somalis living in Minnesota. In his announcement, he said Walz had turned his state into a “hub of fraudulent money laundering activity.”

“Somali gangs are terrorizing the people of this great state, and BILLIONS of dollars are missing. Send them back where they came from. It’s OVER!” » Trump said.

Minnesota state officials also accused Walz of taking full responsibility for the “cascade of systemic failures” that led to the scandal.

Minnesota had an estimated population of 79,000 Somalis, the largest of any state in the United States, according to 2019-2023 statistics provided by Minnesota Compass.
