Trump State Dept Nominee Withdraws After ‘White Culture’ Comments

President Donald Trump’s nominee for a top State Department post withdrew his nomination Tuesday after growing opposition from lawmakers threatened to derail his confirmation.
Earlier in the day, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer accused Jeremy Carl, Trump’s nominee for assistant secretary of state for international organizations, of having “a long history of racist, white supremacist and anti-Semitic views,” saying those perspectives disqualify him from serving at the State Department. Carl took to social media to step down after weeks of scrutiny over past remarks about white identity and American culture.
“I wanted to announce that I am withdrawing my nomination for Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizational Affairs. I am extremely grateful to President Trump for nominating me and then (upon the expiration of my original appointment) reappointing me to this role, and I am also grateful to Secretary Rubio and his team for their continued support throughout this long and tedious process,” Carl wrote.

“Unfortunately, for high positions like this, the support of the president and secretary of state is very important but not sufficient. We also needed the unanimous support of all Republican senators on the Foreign Relations Committee, given the unanimous opposition of Senate Democrats to my candidacy, and unfortunately, at that time, that unanimous support was not available.”
Carl fired back at Schumer in an article on (RELATED: Trump nominee goes on the offensive after Chuck Schumer accuses him of ‘white supremacy’)
“You seem to only disavow racism, anti-Semitism, and racial supremacy if you think you can use those words as a stick with which to beat Republicans. That’s why you haven’t denounced the racist anti-white comments of Texas House Democratic Leader Gene Wu or Democratic Congresswoman and U.S. Senate candidate Jasmine. “The only people crying are mediocre white boys Crockett,” Carl wrote.
The Senate questioned Carl in February over past remarks in which he warned against the erasure of “white culture” in the United States, comments that senators cited during questioning during his confirmation hearing. Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy directly referenced these earlier statements, pressing Carl to explain what values he believed were disappearing and how “white culture” was being erased in America.
Carl responded that he was confused by Murphy’s question, saying that although he had sometimes referred to “white culture” in speeches and writings, his primary concern was preserving what he described as a shared American civic culture. He added that the “white culture” he was referring to largely referred to the culture shared by most Americans before the Hart-Celler Immigration Act of 1965 and that people from all backgrounds could participate in that culture.
