On CNN’s “The Lead” Monday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said President Donald Trump’s comments about U.S. oil companies taking oil from Venezuela are “what imperialism is.”

Sanders said, “People can’t afford housing or groceries. Our health care system is collapsing right now. So maybe instead of trying to run Venezuela, the president could try to run the United States of America better. That’s number one. Second, and more importantly, I think what Trump has done has made the world a lot less safe. If the United States can attack and kidnap, the president of Venezuela, who is clearly corrupt, is clearly a bad guy, but he’s the president there If we can do that, what’s to stop any other country on earth, for whatever reason or with terrorist organizations, from launching military attacks Trump has violated international law and that’s going to make us all, I think, less safe?

He added: “Maduro is a bad journalist. And we need to support democratic forces, in Venezuela and throughout this country, to fight for democracy. But that’s not Trump’s goal. Trump has made it clear that he wants to take Venezuela’s oil. The last I heard, that’s imperialism. And I suspect people around the world are saying, wow, we’re going back to where we were 100 or 50 years ago with a great and powerful country. We Let us exploit the poorest countries for their natural resources.
