Intensive negotiations continue on Saturday between the EU and the United States before a crisis meeting in Scotland between Donald Trump and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to avoid an expensive trade war.

Trump spent the night in his turnberry golf resort family during a private visit, but took the time to criticize European leaders on wind turbines and immigration claiming that there is no Europe unless they “come together”.

“I say two things to Europe. Stop the windmills. You ruin your country. I really think, it’s so sad. You fly and you see these windmills everywhere, ruining your beautiful fields and your valleys and killing your birds,” he said.

“On immigration, you’d better come together,” he said. “You’re not going to have Europe anymore.”

On Saturday morning, he abandoned a meeting planned with the press, which traveled with him on Air Force One, for a golf round to his seaside career with music sounds from the buggy he led.

Sky News, parked next to the course, reported that the songs included the daughter of Billy Joel Uptown, the memory of Elaine Paige and the Simon and Garfunkel bridge on the troubled water.

Presented as a four-day family visit to Scotland, Trump meets European leaders and the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, raising hopes of new trade agreements with the EU and the United Kingdom.

On the prospects of an EU trade agreement, the American president said that there were “20 collision points”. When asked what they were, he said, “Well, I don’t want to tell you what are the collage points.”

He described Von der Leyen as a “highly respected woman” and said that the meeting on Sunday with the EU chief would be “good”, assessing the chances of an agreement like “a good 50-50”.

It is understood that Von Der Leyen and his collaborators fly on Saturday, with the European Commerce Commissioner, Maroš Šefčovič, arriving on Sunday morning.

It is expected that the agreement will focus on a plan agreement in principle of more than 15% of price rates for exports, including cars, but with a 50% price in steel. There may also be a breakthrough agreement on pharmaceutical products, fixing a rate of 15% for exports.

Although this would violate a long-standing agreement of the World Trade Organization that drugs are evaluated at a zero rate, it would be far from the 200% rate that Trump threatened to impose pharmaceutical products earlier this month.

This would have triggered a very damaging trade war not only with Ireland, where many American multinationals are based, but in Germany, Denmark, Belgium, France and Spain.

Von der Leyen spokesperson Paula Pinho said: “Intensive technique and political negotiations [level] have been underway between the EU and the United States. Managers will now take stock and examine the scope of a balanced result which ensures stability and predictability to companies and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic. »»

It is believed that the meeting will be held in the Aberdeenshire and will be followed by a series of meetings with Starmer on Monday, in the hope that he will extend the agreement on the bare bone trade he concluded in May.

Trump’s arrival in Scotland required the largest security operation since the death of Elizabeth II in 2022. More than 5,000 members of police and security staff are involved in the four -day -old visit without risk after the assassination attempt a year ago.

High fences of perimeter have been erected around the coastal golf course with naval ships patrolling on the shore while safety drones above and dozens of security details marked the complex early on Saturday.

The strong security presence can be a taste of the events to come later in August when the American vice-president, JD Vance, and his family arrive for a vacation in the Cotswolds, apparently in the village of Charlbury.

The inhabitants who have resisted the expansion of the Trump golf course in the past have asked who would be the bill for the security agreements.
