‘Erupcja’ trailer: Charli XCX stars in explosive sapphic romance

Charli XCX goes from pop star to movie star with a string of films, including the queer fantasy 100 nights of heroes, the mockumentary The momentand the sapphic romantic drama Érupcja.

Charli XCX co-wrote the screenplay for Erupcja with director Pete Ohs and co-star Lena Góra. Set in Warsaw, the film focuses on two women, a local florist named Nel (Góra) and a tourist named Bethany (XCX), who has her love life broken several times. But this time, Bethany has brought her current boyfriend, Rob (Will Madden), who is looking for the perfect time to propose.

In my review of the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, cited in the trailer above, I applauded: “Shot with the kinetic, poised edge of the French New Wave, this Polish production feels timeless.” His scenes unfold with enough specificity that the audience can hang on, but enough ambiguity that they can feel like a dream. There’s a touch of a fairy tale about it. Ohs keeps his characters curious and fluid, refusing to push them into easily defined roles of hero and villain. Erupcja embraces the wild nature of love, messy and wonderful…. Erupcja is a thunderous rumble of drama and romance, leaving its audience excited and shaken. “
