Trump’s Fury Over Iran Failings Just Got Worse. Take Note, Dems.

Currently, senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania is the only 45 Democrats of the body (and the two independents who caucus with them) to explicitly declare the opposition. “I would never like to restrict a future president, republican or democrat to do this kind of military exercise,” said Fetterman on Thursday.

Fetterman also insisted that he wanted to “reserve the law” so that future presidents do the “type of thing” that President Barack Obama has done in the past or that “Trump has done with Iran”, which Fetterman supported.

However, according to a source familiar with the situation, Fetterman is against the measure but does not want to be the decisive vote that kills him. His vote can therefore still be in the air.

Kaine’s resolution would prohibit the use of the armed forces for “hostilities” against Iran unless “explicitly authorized” by Congress, in accordance with the idea that, under the Constitution, the Congress “has the sole power to declare war”. Although the Congress has already adopted a measure requiring the authorization of the Congress for Military Hostilities – the resolution of the war powers of 1973 – the presidents of the two parties unilaterally launched various strikes and limited operations, culminating in the bombing of Iran by Trump.

A small handful of the 53 Republicans of the Senate – which voted for a similar resolution in 2020 – may be at stake. This includes senators such as Rand Paul and Todd Young, who have not revealed their intentions. Although it remains likely that most or all these few will taste, if even a few “yes” votes, the result could prove if each last democrat supports it.

An explicit ban on Trump’s additional warming is very necessary at the moment. It is sometimes said that this debate is theoretical because Trump has already undertaken his bombing and Iran and Israel have reached a fragile ceasefire. But Trump’s conduct in the past two weeks has only highlighted the need for Congress to get involved much more than so far.
