In these warnings, it is hard not to hear echoes of today’s United States under Trump: the militarization of American cities, the weaponization of government against political opponents, violations of civil liberties, the expulsion of dissidents, and attacks on the press, academia, and other institutions.
Last month, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, a global democracy watchdog, reported that it had reported twice as many instances of the U.S. government’s erosion or abolition of the “rules, institutions and norms” that shape American democracy in the first four months of Trump’s second term than in the previous two years. Examples include “efforts to restrict academic freedom, criminalize protest activities, question the legitimacy of certified elections, selectively restrict media access to the executive branch, and circumvent due process standards.”
