Amazon admits its black-and-white Kindles offer the best reading experience – not the Colorsoft

- Monochrome Kindles are ‘slightly sharper,’ says Amazon
- Information appears on the Kindle Color FAQ
- You always get a high-quality experience on Colorsoft Kindles
When Amazon introduced the Colorsoft Kindle last October, we wondered what kinds of compromises might come with the color screen – and Amazon has now officially admitted that its black and white e-readers offer a superior reading experience.
As spotted by Good e-Reader (via Android Police), the FAQs for some color Kindles have been updated to indicate that the monochrome Kindle Paperwhite offers a “slightly sharper” display for your ebooks.
Although the text appears to have disappeared from the page of the new Kindle Scribe Colorsoft introduced last month, it is still on the listing of the Kindle Colorsoft and even the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition.
That’s not to say there’s anything particularly bad about the Colorsoft models: Amazon says these e-readers provide a “high-quality reading experience,” albeit with a different level of brightness and texture than black-and-white Kindles.
Color me interested
We certainly had no complaints about the display in our Amazon Kindle Colorsoft review, calling the e-reader’s screen vivid, sharp, and fantastic for content like comic books. Of course, the screen is not bright and saturated like that of a phone or tablet.
The element of color is added by a separate color layer: specifically, a Kaleido 3 color display from E Ink, supporting 4,096 different hues. It’s the same screen technology you’ll also find on Kobo color e-readers.
Kobo actually beat Amazon in the race to release a color e-reader to the world, and there’s a case to be made that Kobo’s models – the Libra Color and Clara Color – are going to give you better value for money.
We haven’t had a chance to review the latest Kindle Scribe Colorsoft in full, but our first impressions are good and, of course, it adds pen support. The e-reader’s color screens may be slightly less sharp, but that’s nothing to worry about.
