Dwayne Johnson embodies MMA icon and UFC champion Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine, with A24’s new trailer giving the best look we’ve seen yet of the Fast and Furious Hollywood star and WWE legend in his much-anticipated role.
Written and directed by Uncut Gems‘ Benny Safdie, The Smashing Machine tracks Kerr’s career of tournaments and championships underpinned by personal turbulence. The trailer focuses on Kerr’s relationship with his then-wife Dawn Staples, played by Emily Blunt, and his experience with substance abuse, all set to a dramatic version of Phil Collins’ “Against All Odds.”
Just from the two minutes of this trailer, it seems audiences are in for a few rounds of emotional upheaval with The Smashing Machine.
The Smashing Machine premiered at the Venice International Film Festival ahead of its theatrical debut on Oct. 3.
