Members of the UK Labor Party voted to recognize that Israel commits a genocide in Gaza, in a decision that increases pressure on the British government to adopt the same position.

The delegates at the Labor Party Conference approved an emergency request supporting the conclusions of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry, which concluded earlier this month that Israel “committed a genocide”. The vote was strongly supported by the unions.

The decision contrasts with the head of work and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as well as the main ministers, who argued that the question of genocide should be determined by international courts rather than politicians.

Israel faces a case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague where he is accused of having committed a genocide.

David Lammy David Lammy reaffirmed this position after the conference vote.

“This means that it must be for the CIJ with their judges and judicial, and for the ICC, to determine the question of genocide in relation to the Convention. It is not for politicians like me to do,” he said, adding that he believed in “the order based on the rules”.
