RAHWAY – Construction on a new dog park at Wheatena Park, located at the corner of West Grand and Elizabeth avenues, is expected to begin in the spring.

On Nov. 10, the City Council approved a resolution awarding a contract for construction of the dog park to Picerno-Giordano Construction of Kenilworth for $435,150, which was the lowest of eight bids received for the project, according to the resolution.

The project is being funded through a $500,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs through a legislative grant program. The grant will allow the city to cover engineering, permitting and construction of the dog park without using local taxpayer funds.

The new dog park will transform a space on Union County-owned property into an inclusive community destination for residents and their dogs. When completed, the dog park will provide a safe and comfortable place for dogs and owners to gather, play and connect.

A use and maintenance agreement with Union County authorizes the city to develop and maintain the dog park on county land.

Wheatena’s new dog park is expected to feature separate fenced areas for large and small dogs, secure double-gated entrances, dog-friendly play equipment, a shared water fountain for dogs and their owners and a new walkway connecting the park entrances to the street.

“Projects like this are what keep Rahway going. » declared Mayor Raymond A. Giacobbe. “It represents our commitment to progress, recreation and the simple joy of being part of a connected community.”
