One of the longest stellar obscuring events ever observed was likely caused by the gigantic saucer-shaped rings of an invisible brown dwarf or “super-Jupiter” blocking the light of its host star, astronomers say. For decades the star, located 3,200 light-years from Earth and about twice the size of our sun, was observed to be stable, but by the end of 2024 it had faded significantly.
