A 13 -year -old boy died after being trapped in a Maryland temporal drain during strong precipitation and floods on the East Coast, officials said.

The children played in the rain Thursday in a common area between the apartment buildings in Mount Aly, a city of around 10,000 people at around 30 miles (48 km) west of Baltimore, but the flood waters rushed and the boy was swept away in the pipe, according to a spokesperson for Mount Airy Fire Company, Doug Alexander.

People tried to save the boy, but the water pressure was too strong and continued to push him further into the pipe, he said. After the slowdown in the rain, they were able to release it, but it was too late, said Alexander.
