The USS Nimitz, a Navy aircraft carrier more than 50 years old, will leave Washington waters for the last time as the Navy plans to retire the ship.

KIRO 7 confirmed that the aircraft carrier took off Saturday, March 7, heading to Norfolk, Virginia, where it will be decommissioned in May.

It is the Navy’s oldest aircraft carrier and the first of its kind. It was commissioned in 1975. It has called Bremerton home since 2015.
