Utah Republican State Rep. Trevor Lee provided the perfect response to a scripture-based rebuke.

Patricia Mead, a disgruntled Utah citizen and registered Republican, says she emailed Lee after reading the bill HB88. Lee is the lead sponsor of the bill, which “addresses lawful presence for public benefits,” that is, restricts illegal immigrants from receiving certain public services. I sent him an email, just one sentence, quoting Luke 6:31 from the Bible: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”,” Mead writing in a letter to The Salt Lake Tribune. Lee received pushback on the HB88 bill from other Utah House Republicans. GOP leadership reprimanded Lee, then a candidate for the Utah House, in 2022 for operating a secret social media account criticizing Pride Month, homosexuality and transgenderism, among other things.

Mead says she was “quite surprised to receive his angry and threatening response.”

That response, according to Mead, said: “What’s your address? I’m going to start sending everyone to your house. And if you say no, you’re not like Christ.” Mead’s response tacitly acknowledges that being in close contact with countless numbers of uncontrolled people migrants is indeed a threat. Mead seems perfectly happy with constrained generosity, in the form of taxes channeled to illegal migrants, but balks at the idea of personal generosity. Furthermore, I am sure Lee is following the Golden Rule in proposing the HB88 bill. Lee, to my knowledge, has never entered a foreign country or taken advantage of public services. It is normal that he forces others to follow his example.
