Under the upcoming guidelines, masks will be mandatory for patients, visitors and staff at hospitals, primary care centers and residential care facilities located in high-risk areas, the Daily Star reports.
Facilities treating immunocompromised patients and nursing homes will be prioritized due to the high risk of serious complications. Although masks are still strongly recommended for people with symptoms, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses outside of healthcare settings, they will not be mandatory unless local authorities increase their alert level.
For expats residing in Spain, this reintroduction of mandatory masks in medical establishments means they will need to have a face covering on hand when visiting hospitals, clinics or care homes.
