Victoria Monét tells Michelle Obama she faced abortion pressure as artist

The singer and songwriter of R&B, Victoria Monet, revealed that she had pressure on abortion after learning that she was pregnant with her daughter, during an appearance on the podcast of former First Lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday.

Monet, who won Grammys in 2024 for the best new artist, the best R&B album and the best engineering album, shared how maternity has had an impact on her career after giving birth to his daughter Hazel in 2021.

Everyone in her professional circle did not support her pregnancy, she recalls. The singer explained that it was difficult to share the celebration news because she understood that she might not be well received by her associates.

“So when I got pregnant, I was an independent artist. I worked with this company called Platoon working in the United Kingdom. And when you are an artist, although you are a human, you are technically the business,” said Monet on the Podcast. “So, having to explain to someone who is a partner in your business that your business can slow down because of pregnancy, is difficult, but it is also something that you are supposed to feel festive.”

Platoon is a musical distribution company based in London and creative services that helps stimulate independent artists before signing agreements with large labels.

After announcing the news of her trading partner for Zoom, Monet said that she had received a presentation telling her how difficult and expensive to raise a child.
