Virginia Democrats Just Engineered the Most Extreme Gerrymander in the Country – RedState

Virginia Democrats did what they said they were going to do, and now the Commonwealth faces the most egregious congressional map in the entire country.
On Thursday, Democratic House Speaker Don Scott and Senate President Sen. Louise Lucas confirmed to the media that state lawmakers had approved a new map that would eliminate most current Republican seats, with some of the new district lines drawn with some Democratic politicians in mind. They had been working behind closed doors all week to fine-tune the details of the new map; the big question was whether they would eliminate three or four of the congressional seats currently held by Republicans.
Well, now we have the answer. They are going at it full throttle with the intention of killing all but one GOP-held seat. The new map would essentially reward Democrats with 10 seats and limit Republicans to just one. The current split between Democrats and Republicans is 6 to 5. Senator Lucas crowed, “Donald Trump knows the midterms are a LOSS, and our lines are locked,” while his accomplice, Speaker Scott, boasted, “Donald Trump started it, Virginia will finish it.” »

BREAKING: Virginia House Speaker Don Scott (D) and Sen. Louise Lucas (D) say a new congressional map is being dropped today or tomorrow that puts it between 10 Democrats and 1 Republican.
“Donald Trump knows the midterm elections are a LOSS, and our lines are blocked.”
“He started the fire. Virginia puts an end to it.”
Louise Lucas has been a staunch advocate of the 10-1 map for months now and began pushing for drastic gerrymandering even before Virginia’s 2025 elections. It’s worth noting that Lucas, who runs a cannabis store in Portsmouth, was previously charged with a felony for her role in vandalizing a Confederate statue during the Black Lives Matter riots during the summer of 2020; one person was injured after a crowd toppled the statue, leading Lucas to be charged with “conspiracy to commit a felony and injury to a monument over $1,000” for his role. The charges were later dropped.

Democrats are poised to destroy most of Virginia’s Republican congressional seats
Here’s a bit of the new map (and read “competitive” as “strongly Democratic”):
NEWS: Some details on the VA card, according to several sources
2 competitive places. 1 is red. 8 are blue#VA02 is a narrow Harris seat. Elaine Luria (D) would run here#VA06 is also a narrow Harris seat. Includes college towns. Could see the Tom Perriello (D) vs. Ben Cline (R) match

An analysis of how the borders are likely to be redrawn concludes that this is clearly a gerrymander that disenfranchises much of the Commonwealth.
But assuming Democrats fully exploit their advantage, Republicans across rural Virginia, including those in southern Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley, would be effectively disenfranchised in congressional elections until 2032, after the next census.
The only safe haven for Republican congressional candidates would be far southwest Virginia.
And here’s why the Democratic map would be a disproportionate gerrymander:
Another way to look at it is that states (California, Texas and Florida) are trying to wrest five seats from much larger populations. California, for example, has a congressional delegation four times larger than Virginia’s.
What happens next isn’t entirely clear at this point.
Democrats would like to see an election referendum held in April that would overturn an amendment to the state constitution that removed lawmakers’ redistricting powers. As RedState’s Sister Toldjah recently reported, “A Virginia Circuit Court Judge Slapped [Democrats’] “The proposed 2026 midterm gerrymandering, ruling that the way they went about it procedurally was illegal.” But some experts have suggested the decision could only affect Tazewell County, meaning the referendum could soon take place in the rest of the state and, if passed, the new map would be adopted in time for the midterm elections in November.
The new map is expected to be made public on Friday.
