Voting kicks off in Virginia governor’s race — as Trump policies take center-stage
The anticipated vote in person began on Friday in the elections of governors of Virginia, marking one of the first major political competitions since last year’s presidential race, and a probable bell tower for President Trump’s policies.
The two contenders – Governor Winle-Sears Republican Lieutenant And Former Democrat representative Abigail Spanberger – held public appearances on Friday to launch the final stages of their respective campaigns, before a general election of November 4. Spanberger is favored in certain recent polls.
Spanberger voted on Friday morning in a polling station in West Henrico, near the capital of Richmond. Addressing CBS News thereafter, the former deputy said that his campaign focused on problems with an impact on the daily life of Virginians.
“Whether it is because you have just seen your rent increase, or you think you may want to buy your first home, or try to recover your pharmacy prescription for your child, for your parents, for yourself, affordability continues to be in mind for people in Virginia,” Spanberger told CBS News.
Meanwhile, Earle-Sears on Friday organized a gathering of surpassing with the Republican Governor of Virginia Glenn Youngkin and Vivek Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur and former republican presidential candidate who presents himself for the governor of Ohio. She strongly quoted the economic file of Youngkin, endeavor to the limited popular governor.
“We have much more work to do. We have regulations that we still have to get rid of,” said Earle-Sears at the rally. “We have more jobs we have to produce.”
The Doge and Trump administration plays a key role

The sweeping of the Trump administration on the federal workforce – led by The Government Ministry of Efficiency, or DOGE – could play a particularly important role in Virginia. The state had nearly 150,000 civilian federal workers from last year, more than any other state outside California, according to a Congressal Research Service report.
Virginia has lost 7,800 federal jobs in the first half of this year and is expected to lose 9,300 government – federal, state and local jobs – at the end of 2025, the Weldon Cooper Center at the University of Virginia said last month.
Spanberger positioned himself as a Trump enemy, arguing that his accent on affordability includes postponement on the “bad policy” that comes out of Washington and the presentation of plans that aim to mitigate the financial impact that these policies have on Virginians.
Earle-Sears spoke favorably about Mr. Trump, although the president remained not engaged in the campaign for the hope of the Republican governor. Asked about the candidates Earle-Sears and Downballot Virginia Gop on Friday, Mr. Trump said: “I’m going to have to look at some of them. As you know, it’s a kind of semi-local election.”
Spanberger sought to link his opponent to Mr. Trump and Doge. She attacked Earle-Sears for campaigning alongside Ramaswamy, which she described at CBS News on Friday as “the Doge’s effort architect, who led thousands of Virginians to lose their jobs”. After last year’s elections, Trump appointed Ramaswamy and Elon Musk Co-Leaders from Doge, but Ramaswamy finally moved away. Musk also left Doge, who was followed by an audience falling with Mr. Trump.
Asked about this criticism of CBS News, Earle-Sears called Spanberger as a “typical division politician” and underlined his job creation file and his work as Youngkin.
“We are going to make sure that the Virginians are informed if they want a job, we have a job,” said Earle-Sears. “We continue to create jobs.”
Earle-Sears, on the other hand, attacked Spanberger during the Friday rally for the democrat’s positions on immigration, including his promise to find a collaboration between the authorities of Virginia and the federal immigration agents.

Earle-Sears also denounced the attack on Kirk: “Just because he used his rights to the first amendment, he was shot,” she said in a video on X.
